The RYA Powerboat Level 2 is a two-day practical course teaching you the skills to safely operate a powerboat and is the basis for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC). The course covers close-quarters handling, high-speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery, and collision regulations, providing the foundational knowledge for casual users and a pathway for commercial use, such as working on a superyacht.

Course content
The training is primarily hands-on and covers essential boat handling and seamanship skills. Key areas of instruction include:
Boat preparation: Launching, recovery, and performing pre-departure and routine engine checks.
Boat handling: Low-speed maneuvering in close quarters, handling at planing speeds, and performing high-speed turns.
Emergency procedures: Man overboard recovery drills, handling disabled craft, and using distress signals.
Mooring and anchoring: Securing to a buoy, anchoring, and leaving and coming alongside a pontoon.
Basic navigation: An introduction to navigation, including tides, weather, buoyage systems, and collision regulations (IRPCS).
Safety equipment: Understanding what safety gear is required and how to use it.
Ropework: Tying appropriate knots for various situations.
Candidate requirements
Minimum age: 12 years old. Candidates aged 12 to 15 will receive a certificate endorsed to be used under the supervision of a responsible adult.
Experience: No previous powerboating experience is required to take the course.
Fitness: Candidates should be in sound physical condition.
Commercial endorsement: While the Level 2 certificate is for recreational use, it is a prerequisite for a commercial endorsement, which can be added once the candidate is 17 and has completed the course.
